U16 Soccer Drills
Sixteen in America usually means high school season, which means a compressed schedule, two games a week, a roster with a thirty-player range of ability, and about four usable training sessions before your first match. That reality shapes everything on this page.
In season, the games are the fitness. Adding conditioning to a two-game week gets you injuries, not sharpness. What you need instead are short, high-quality sessions that fix one thing.
The four highest-return topics for a high school squad: set pieces, because a third of the goals in your league come from them and nobody has time to defend them properly. Rest defence, because the counter-attack is how you lose games you were winning. Pressing triggers, because a coordinated press wins you the ball in the other team's half and your fitness doesn't have to be exceptional if the triggers are right. And finishing on tired legs, because your games are decided late.
Bait the build-up, pressing the switch, rest defence game 8v8, finish on heavy legs, attacking corner menu, defending corners zonal man. That's a season's worth of topics right there and every one of them shows up in a result.
Small-sided games do the conditioning invisibly. Two-touch finals, score and keep 7v7, earn the thirds.
The squad management problem is real and it's not a drill. You've got starters who need sharpening and a bench who need developing, and a session that serves one fails the other. Split the group for twenty minutes in the middle. It's more work for you and it's the difference between a squad and a starting eleven with spectators.

Attackers dribble to different strike cones and the keeper must re-set their angle and depth before every shot — positioning made repeatable.
Crowded Box: Catch or Punch
High balls arrive through a forest of mannequins with a challenger on the keeper's toes — claim it clean or punch it safe, then start the attack.
Parry to Safety
Not every shot can be held — this drill scores WHERE the keeper parries, rewarding deflections into wide safe zones and punishing central spills.
Sweeper-Keeper Race
Through balls are fired behind a high defensive line and the keeper must read, race and deal with them first touch — the modern sweeper-keeper trained on a clock.
Distribution Dartboard
Keepers score points by landing throws, side-volleys and driven goal-kicks in target zones at three distances — distribution turned into a darts match.

Build a three-option menu from wide free-kicks — inswinger to the spot, outswinger to the back zone, disguised short — with runners triggered by the taker's cues.
Long Throw Launchpad
A rehearsed long throw-in routine: near-post flick zone, stacked runners attacking the second contact, edge recycler — then flip it and defend the same weapon.
Penalty Pressure Ladder
Penalty practice that actually transfers: every taker builds a fixed routine, climbs consequence rounds, and keepers work from simple scouting cards.
Bulletproof Activation Circuit
A four-station injury-prevention warm-up — hamstring walks, Copenhagen holds, hop-and-stick landings, short accelerations — done properly, not as a queue-and-chat.
Mirror & React Race
Facing pairs copy each other's footwork until the clap — then both explode for the loose ball between them. Warm-up, reactions and a duel in one.
Rondo Carousel
Three 5v2 rondos run side by side and the defenders spin between grids on the coach's call — a warm-up that never lets anyone switch off.
Tempo Loops: Pass & Move
Four-player pass-and-move loops where the legs alternate jog, stride and sprint — and the ball must travel faster every set. Conditioning that still looks like football.
Duel Day Circuit
A three-station battle circuit — shoulder-to-shoulder channel duels, shielding holds, sprint-to-block races. Football strength trained as competition, not gym work.
Off the Wall: Cushion & Play
A rebound wall serves unpredictable bounces; players cushion, set their body and play to whichever colour gate is called — first touch trained against chaos.
Range Finder
Pairs step back through 20, 30 and 40-yard rungs — driven, clipped and curled deliveries must land in a target grid to earn the next distance.
Blind-Side Bounce
Receive from one server and bounce a first-time reverse pass behind the mannequin line to a second server's call — disguise and audio scanning in one rep.
Striker vs Keeper: Duel Ladder
Striker and keeper climb a ladder of alternating 1v1 formats — through-ball race, cutback arrival, rebound pounce — and both keep score. Two positions trained in one duel.

A 20-yard intermittent shuttle test that gives you a hard number on every player's fitness in 15 minutes. Run it week one and again in October.
Broken Play Sprints
Repeated 25-yard sprints, but every one chases a real loose ball and ends with a shot. Conditioning that looks like the game.
Back Pass Under Pressure
The keeper takes a back pass with a forward closing hard and has to choose: play short, clip wide, or clear. Trains the decision, not just the kick.
Second Save Scramble
Save, get up, save again. Trains the keeper to recover to their feet fast and reset for the rebound before the striker gets there.
Kickoff Playbook
Three scripted kickoffs your team can run on command: the long diagonal, the back-and-switch, and the direct press bait. Free possession twice a game.
Defending the Long Throw
Organize the box against a long throw: who marks the flick, who guards the near post, who wins the second ball. Then attack the space it leaves.
Free Kick Wall Beater
Direct free kicks from 20 to 25 yards against a mannequin wall. Over it, around it, or under it; every shooter finds the one that works for them.
Goal Kick Hunt
Press the opponent's short goal kick with a plan: block the keeper's short options, force the pass wide, and win it before halfway.
Cover Shadow Rondo
A 5v2 where the defenders only score for interceptions, not tackles. Forces them to press on angles that block a pass while closing the ball.
Mid-Block Jump
Sit in a compact mid-block, then jump as a unit on the trigger: a bad touch, a sideways pass, or a ball into a fullback facing his own goal.
Clear and Step
The back line clears a cross, then steps up together to catch attackers offside and push the team out. Trains the moment after the danger.
Keeper Starts the Counter
Save, look, throw. The keeper launches a 3v2 counter with a quick throw or roll and the team has 10 seconds to score at the far end.
Score Then Stop
Continuous 4v4 waves where the team that just scored must sprint back and defend the very next attack. No celebrating, no resting.
Ten-Second Escape
4v4+2 in a tight box: keep the ball for 10 seconds under pressure, then release it through a gate to score. Possession with a purpose and a clock.
Back Line Circulation
Back four plus keeper circulate the ball against two pressing forwards, moving it side to side until a fullback can drive forward free. Patient build-up made repeatable.
Pressure, Cover, Balance
A 3v3 where the three defenders must show the triangle every time: one presses, one covers, one balances. The coach freezes play to check it.
Head It Out
Defensive heading built up safely: throws, then served crosses, then a live attacker. Height, distance, and direction, every time. For U14 and up under US heading guidance.
Color Call Passing
Three colors of pinnies moving in one area, and the coach calls the color you have to pass to next. Gets heads up and feet moving in 10 minutes.
Juggle & Stretch Cool-Down
Groups of four keep a ball up while walking between stretch stations. Heart rates come down, touches go up, and nobody sneaks off early.
Perimeter Walk-and-Talk
A cool-down lap in pairs, passing a ball while answering three questions about practice. Recovery for the legs, review for the brain.
Game State Scrimmage
Short scrimmages that start in a game state: up one with 5 minutes left, down one with 10, a man down. Teaches your team to manage a game, not just play one.
Back-to-Goal Escape
Receive with a defender on your back, protect it, then turn and beat them. The forward's bread and butter, trained with a passer and a finish.
Outside-Foot Disguise
The pass that looks like it is going one way and goes the other. Outside-of-the-foot passing from a triangle, built up to a live 3v1.
Six-Man Switch Pattern
Fullback to No. 6 to center back to far fullback, then forward. A six-player switch pattern that takes the ball from one sideline to the other in four passes.
Near-Post Ambush
The striker's near-post run: lose the defender with a check, arrive as the cross is struck, and finish first time with the inside of the foot. Low crosses, high reps.
