Objective

Teach attackers to receive under contact with their back to goal, feel where the defender is, and pick the turn that gets them free to shoot.

Set-up

Full goal with a keeper. Attacker starts 20 yards out with their back to goal; a defender starts touch-tight behind them. Passer 12 yards further back with the balls. Two cone markers 5 yards either side of the attacker.

How it runs

  1. The passer plays a firm pass into the attacker's feet. The defender is passive on rep 1, then live.
  2. The attacker receives, uses arms and body to protect the ball, and feels the defender's side.
  3. If the defender is tight on one side, the attacker spins the other way and drives to shoot. If the defender is off, the attacker turns with the first touch.
  4. Shoot within 4 seconds of the turn. Rotate passer to attacker to defender.
  5. Score 2 for a goal, 1 for a shot on target, and the defender gets 1 for winning the ball or forcing the attacker outside the cone markers.

Coaching points

  • Check away then come to the ball, so you arrive with momentum.
  • Arm out, low center of gravity, ball on the far foot from the defender.
  • Feel the defender; the turn goes away from the contact.
  • Turn and shoot in one motion; don't take an extra touch.

Common mistakes

  • The attacker stands still and waits for the ball, so the defender arrives first; check away and come back to it.
  • The first touch is toward the defender; the touch goes away from the contact side.
  • Players turn with the ball 2 yards from their feet and lose it; the turn is tight, then the drive is long.

Progressions

  • Passer follows the pass to become a second attacker for a 2v1 after the turn.
  • Add a covering defender 10 yards behind.
  • Passer plays a bouncing ball in.

Regressions

  • Defender stays passive for the whole round.
  • Attacker calls the turn direction before receiving.
  • Remove the shot and simply turn and dribble through a gate.

Constraints

  • The attacker may not lay the ball back to the passer; the turn must happen.
