Chop and Change Corridor

A corridor of cone gates where every gate demands a different cut: inside chop, outside hook, drag-back. Then two defenders step in and the moves get tested.

Objective

Build three reliable change-of-direction moves with both feet, then transfer them straight into a 1v1 where a defender forces the choice.

Set-up

A 10x30 yard corridor with three 2-yard cone gates staggered down its length, alternating left and right, 8 yards apart. Players with a ball at the start; two defenders wait beside the corridor for the final stage.

How it runs

  1. Gate 1: dribble at it, inside chop with the right foot to change direction through the gate.
  2. Gate 2: outside hook with the left foot.
  3. Gate 3: drag-back and turn, then accelerate to the end line.
  4. Three runs each, then switch feet for every move. Quality first, then speed.
  5. Stage 2: a defender stands at gate 2 and another at gate 3. They may only move sideways on their gate line; the dribbler must beat each with a move of their choosing.

Coaching points

  • Sell the move: lean one way, go the other.
  • Touch, then explode; the first step after the move wins.
  • Keep the ball close through the gate.
  • Head up as you leave the gate; the next one is already waiting.

Common mistakes

  • Players make the move 5 yards before the gate and jog through it; the move happens at the gate, close enough to touch the cone.
  • The ball is pushed too far after the cut and the defender picks it up; the first touch after the move is small.
  • Kids only ever use their strong foot; run the switch-feet round every session until it is normal.

Progressions

  • Defenders may step off their line toward the dribbler.
  • Time each player's corridor and keep the leaderboard.
  • Add a fourth gate with a free-choice move.

Regressions

  • Walk the moves with no gates.
  • One move for the whole corridor.
  • Widen the gates to 3 yards.

Constraints

  • Every move must be made with the foot named for that gate.
