U12 Soccer Drills
Twelve is where combinations start to work. Not just a pass, but a pass with a second player already moving because she knows what happens next. That's a genuine step up and it's worth building the year around.
Y combination to finish, third man combination, one-two circuit, up-back-through. These look like passing drills and they're really relationship drills — two or three players learning a pattern well enough to run it without discussion. Get one of those working by Christmas and you'll see it in a match, which is a good feeling for everyone.
Receiving on the half-turn deserves a session of its own at this age. The player who receives facing forward has three options; the player who receives facing her own goal has one. That single habit is worth more than any formation change you could make.
Possession work moves up to 4v2, 5v2 and the three-zone game. Direction matters now. A rondo with no direction teaches keeping it; a position game teaches keeping it in order to go somewhere.
Introduce pressing lightly. Not a full team press, but the idea of a trigger: when the ball goes backwards, we go. Back-pass press trigger is enough for a year.
Most groups are on 9v9 now, which is the format where width and depth become real. Wide lanes 5v5 and switch the play 6v6 teach both without a lecture.
Keep a game at the end, always. Twelve-year-olds will forgive an ordinary session that finishes with a good game. They will not forgive the reverse.

Split-Pass Timing
Two attackers circulate against one screening defender — score by threading the through ball into the runner's path at the right moment.
Wide Lanes 5v5
5v5 with a twist — goals only count if the ball travelled through a wing lane first, so teams must go wide before they go in.
Intercept Alley
Two defenders patrol a middle alley, reading passes pinged between the outside teams — a point for every interception.
Head-Start 1v1
Attacker gets a 2-second head start to the end line; the defender hares after them to recover goal-side — chase or be chased.
Soccer Tennis Starter

Three mannequin 'lines of pressure' to play through — every pass that breaks a line into a receiver between units scores a rung on the ladder.
Earn the Thirds 6v6
A 6v6 build game where goals only count after a completed pass in every third — and the rules loosen as the team masters each stage.
Winger's Choice
Fullback and winger combine against one defender in the wide channel — the winger's first touch tells the fullback whether to overlap or underlap.
Second-Ball Strikes
Every attack begins as a knock-down or loose ball outside the box — midfielders arrive and finish in two touches before the defence resets.
Score and Keep 7v7
A 7v7 where the scoring team is rewarded with the ball from the restart — so the team that concedes must press immediately or chase the game.
GK Angle Ladder
Attackers dribble to different strike cones and the keeper must re-set their angle and depth before every shot — positioning made repeatable.
Distribution Dartboard
Keepers score points by landing throws, side-volleys and driven goal-kicks in target zones at three distances — distribution turned into a darts match.
Goalie Wars

Penalty Pressure Ladder
Penalty practice that actually transfers: every taker builds a fixed routine, climbs consequence rounds, and keepers work from simple scouting cards.
Mirror & React Race
Facing pairs copy each other's footwork until the clap — then both explode for the loose ball between them. Warm-up, reactions and a duel in one.
Off the Wall: Cushion & Play
A rebound wall serves unpredictable bounces; players cushion, set their body and play to whichever colour gate is called — first touch trained against chaos.

Build-Out Line Goal Kicks
Three rehearsed goal-kick patterns for 7v7 and 9v9 teams playing with the US build-out line. Turn a restart into your first attack.

The three words every young defender needs: sprint to close, slow down before you arrive, steer the attacker where you want them. A 1v1 pressing game with a passer.
Score Then Stop
Continuous 4v4 waves where the team that just scored must sprint back and defend the very next attack. No celebrating, no resting.

Five-Pass Payday
5v5 keep-away where five passes in a row pay out a point and a forward pass through the middle pays double. Young players learn to keep it, then go.
Pressure, Cover, Balance
A 3v3 where the three defenders must show the triangle every time: one presses, one covers, one balances. The coach freezes play to check it.
Block Tackle Tunnel
A narrow tunnel where the attacker has to come through the defender. Teaches the block tackle with the inside of the foot, safely and with points on the line.
Color Call Passing
Three colors of pinnies moving in one area, and the coach calls the color you have to pass to next. Gets heads up and feet moving in 10 minutes.
Juggle & Stretch Cool-Down
Groups of four keep a ball up while walking between stretch stations. Heart rates come down, touches go up, and nobody sneaks off early.
Chop and Change Corridor
A corridor of cone gates where every gate demands a different cut: inside chop, outside hook, drag-back. Then two defenders step in and the moves get tested.
Back-to-Goal Escape
Receive with a defender on your back, protect it, then turn and beat them. The forward's bread and butter, trained with a passer and a finish.
Legal Throw Gates
Teach a legal throw-in in 10 minutes: both feet down, ball behind the head, two hands. Then score points by hitting gates at three distances.
Lead Pass Timing
Pass into the path of a runner through a gate so they never break stride. Teaches the weight and timing of a lead pass before the game demands it.
Corner Pockets
Cones hang in the four corners of the goal and every shot has a target. Young players learn to place a shot low and hard before they learn to blast it.
