Objective

Sharp reactions, sprint mechanics and competitive fire — plus a 1v1 finish for the winners.

Set-up

Two teams line opposite sides of a 20x20 box, numbered 1-5 on each side. A ball sits on a cone in the centre.

How it runs

  1. Coach calls a number — one player from each team sprints round their right-hand corner cone.
  2. First to the centre ball attacks; the other defends.
  3. The attacker tries to dribble over the opponent's line; the defender tries to win it and counter.
  4. First team to 5 line-crossings wins; rotate numbers so everyone races.

Coaching points

  • React on the call — first two steps decide the race.
  • Arrive with control: decelerate into the ball, don't kick it away at speed.
  • If second to the ball, defend immediately — angle the approach to cut the line.
  • Attackers: change of pace beats a flat sprint.

Common mistakes

  • Players watch the racers and miss their own number — everyone repeats the call out loud.
  • The first touch at speed is huge and the duel is instantly lost — coach the decelerating touch.
  • The slower player gives up the race — second place still wins the duel with good defending.

Progressions

  • Call two numbers for a 2v2.
  • Add a second ball and play both simultaneously.
  • Loser does the next call's race again — reward chasing.

Regressions

  • Shorten the running loop.
  • No defender for the youngest: first to the ball dribbles home unopposed.
  • Walk-through one race slowly.

Constraints

  • The race route is fixed — corner first, then the ball.
