U8 Soccer Drills
Under-eight is where you start to see it. Some of them can stop a ball on purpose now. Some of them have noticed that other players exist. Not many, and not consistently, but it's there.
Keep almost everything from the U7 approach and add one thing: a reason to look up. Follow the leader skills, mirror and react, empty the nest, sharks and minnows with a target. All still games, all still fast, but now something in the game requires her to notice another person.
Passing starts here, gently. Gate passing pairs and pass and follow square are enough. Do not run a passing drill that involves standing still and receiving a rolled ball from four feet away — she can already do that, and it teaches her that passing is a thing done in stationary pairs, which will take you three years to undo.
Dribbling is still the priority and should be most of the session. This is the age where the players who will be brave later are learning that trying something and losing the ball does not result in anyone shouting. Protect that fiercely.
Small-sided games at the end, 3v3 or 4v4, tiny goals, no keepers, short games. 3v3 mini goal festival is ideal. Everyone touches the ball roughly every fifteen seconds, which is about fifty times more often than in a 7v7.
One thing to watch: at U8 a coach can win every game by giving the ball to the fastest child and telling everyone else to spread out. It works. It also produces a team that falls apart at eleven, and one very tired child. Don't.
