Equipment

3-4 balls, 4 cones, 2 bibs for the mud monsters

Objective

Warm up legs and lungs while training short passing accuracy under a time pressure that matters — your mate is stuck!

Set-up

Mark a 20x20 yard box. Two 'mud monsters' (taggers in bibs) have no ball. Three or four rescuers dribble balls; everyone else runs free inside the box.

How it runs

  1. Mud monsters chase the free runners — anyone tagged is stuck in the mud: feet wide, hands on head, shouting 'HELP!'
  2. Rescuers dribble over and free a stuck player by passing the ball through their open legs.
  3. A freed player collects the ball and becomes a rescuer; the old rescuer becomes a free runner.
  4. If the monsters freeze EVERYONE, they win the round.
  5. Play 90-second rounds and rotate the monsters and starting rescuers.

Coaching points

  • Dribble close to the stuck player before you pass — short and accurate beats long and hopeful.
  • Use the inside of the foot and aim through the middle of the legs.
  • Rescuers, eyes up — go to the player who's been stuck longest.
  • Free runners, dodge and dart — quick changes of direction lose a monster.

Common mistakes

  • Rescuers blast the pass from miles away and miss — dribble in close, then a short firm pass through the gate of legs.
  • Stuck players close their legs or wander off — freeze position is part of the game: feet wider than shoulders, stand still, shout for help.
  • The same fast kids are rescuers all game — the swap rule (freed player takes the ball) keeps roles rotating; enforce it.

Progressions

  • Add a third mud monster.
  • Rescue passes must come from at least 3 yards away.
  • Monsters can guard a stuck player (but only one each).

Regressions

  • One monster only and a bigger box.
  • Rescuers may roll the ball through with hands for the youngest.
  • Stuck players can be freed with a simple pass to their feet instead of through the legs.

Constraints

  • Mud monsters cannot tag a rescuer while the ball is at their feet — the ball is a shield.
