Objective

Introduce the set position, W-shaped hands, and quick reactions in a game that keeps every young keeper moving and smiling.

Set-up

Pairs, 4 yards apart, each pair with three tennis balls and one soccer ball. Two cones mark a 3-yard-wide 'goal' behind the catcher.

How it runs

  1. Thrower starts with underhand tosses to the chest; catcher makes the W with their hands and catches in front of the face.
  2. Every clean catch is a point. Drop, and the thrower gets the point.
  3. After 10 throws, switch to bounced throws to the sides so the catcher must shuffle.
  4. Switch to the soccer ball: rolled balls into the scoop, then thrown balls to catch at chest height.
  5. Final round: the thrower may fake before throwing. First to 10 points wins and swaps roles.

Coaching points

  • Feet shoulder-width, knees soft, hands out in front.
  • Thumbs together behind the ball: make the W.
  • Move the feet first, then the hands.
  • Watch the ball into the hands, then look up.

Common mistakes

  • Catchers clap the ball with flat palms; show the W and have them catch the first five throws slowly.
  • Feet stay planted and the catcher reaches sideways; make the shuffle step the first thing you praise.
  • Throwers try to score instead of serve; remind them the game is only fun if the throws can be caught.

Progressions

  • Two throwers alternating so the catcher must find the next ball.
  • Catcher starts sitting and must stand up before every throw.
  • Add a small goal and let the thrower kick a soft shot.

Regressions

  • Bigger, softer ball for the youngest players.
  • Thrower calls 'left' or 'right' before throwing.
  • Catch and hold without the points to remove pressure.

Constraints

  • Throws must be catchable: no higher than the head, no faster than a firm toss.
