Objective
Build the habit of recovering to a set position immediately after a save, so the second shot meets a keeper who is ready, not one still on the ground.
Set-up
Keeper in goal. Server A with balls at the PK spot. Server B with balls 14 yards out, level with the far post. A recovery cone 3 yards in front of the goal line on the near-post side.
How it runs
- Server A plays a low ball to the keeper's side that forces a collapse dive.
- As the keeper hits the ground, Server B shouts 'Up!' and strikes the second ball 2 seconds later toward the opposite side.
- The keeper must be back on their feet and set before the second shot is hit.
- Six reps, alternating the side of the first dive. Rest 60 seconds. Three sets.
- Score: 2 points for two saves, 1 for one save, and a bonus point if the second save is made from a set position.
Coaching points
- Push off the ground with the top hand and the bottom knee together.
- Feet first, then eyes: get set before you look for the shooter.
- Small steps to reposition; a big lunge gets you stuck.
- Hands ready at hip height as you come up.
Common mistakes
- The keeper rolls onto their back after the first save and loses two seconds; coach the recovery on the front side with the top hand pushing.
- Eyes stay on the first ball after it is parried; the moment it leaves the hands the eyes go to the second server.
- The second save is a desperate lunge from a crouch; if it keeps happening, slow the count until the set position appears.
Progressions
- Server B shoots on a whistle rather than a fixed count, so the keeper cannot predict the timing.
- Add a striker who chases the rebound of the first save.
- Serve the second ball high to demand a standing catch after the dive.
Regressions
- Increase the gap between shots to 4 seconds.
- First save from a kneeling start to teach the push-up pattern.
- Roll the second ball along the ground.
Constraints
- Second shot goes only if the keeper has both feet under them; otherwise it is served again.
