U10 Soccer Drills
Under-ten is the best age to coach and I'll argue with anyone about it. They're old enough to understand an idea and young enough to try it without worrying about looking stupid. That combination doesn't last.
Formation is still the last thing that matters. Can they receive a ball without it bouncing off them into the car park? Start there. First touch triangle, receiving on the half-turn, ball mastery circuit, ten minutes early in every session while they're fresh.
This is the year to introduce real defending, and to do it properly rather than by shouting. 1v1 front-foot defending and jockey mirror channel teach a ten-year-old that defending is a skill with technique in it, not an attitude. Players who learn that now defend well forever.
The 4v2 rondo arrives at this age and will still be in their sessions at thirty. Run it with consequences — count the passes, swap the loser in — or it becomes a warm-up nobody thinks during.
Small-sided games should be at least a third of the session. 4v4 four goal game, 3v3 mini goal festival, two ball chaos. And mini world cup at the end of a good week, because it's the one they'll ask for by name and there's no harm in them wanting to come back.
What to leave alone: positions as identities, tactics beyond "spread out when we have it, get close together when we don't", and winning. I like winning. I like it less than I like all eleven of them coming back next season.
