Objective
Pack in 1v1 duels, 2v2 decisions (dribble or pass?) and instant transitions, with a king-of-the-hill scoreboard that makes every second matter.
Set-up
20x15 yard pitch with a mini goal at each end. Pairs of players wait beside the halfway line, each waiting pair holding a fresh ball. Two pairs start on the pitch.
How it runs
- Play 2v2, first goal wins OR most goals after 90 seconds (coach counts down the last ten out loud).
- The winning pair stays on as kings; the losers jog off to the back of the waiting area.
- The next pair sprints on with their fresh ball and attacks IMMEDIATELY — kings must be ready before they celebrate.
- Kings score a crown point for every game won; three crowns in a row and they must 'defend the throne' playing one game with weak feet only.
- Run 12–15 minutes; most crowns at the end is King of the Pitch.
Coaching points
- Score fast: dribble at the goal the second you win the ball.
- Two of you — if your mate is free in front of goal, the pass beats the dribble.
- When the new pair runs on, the first job is to win the ball, not catch your breath.
- Defend goal-side: body between the attacker and your goal.
Common mistakes
- Kings celebrate while the next pair scores into an empty net — that goal stands; they learn to reset instantly.
- Waiting pairs switch off and miss their entry — give them the countdown job so they are watching the game.
- One player hogs every touch — crown points only count if both players touched the ball in the winning game.
Progressions
- Goals scored within 10 seconds of entering count double.
- Kings defend the throne shooting only with their weaker foot.
- Add a halfway line the ball must cross before you can shoot.
Regressions
- Lengthen games to 2 minutes so duels settle.
- Losers stay, winners rotate — keeps weaker pairs getting more minutes.
- Make it 3v3 with bigger goals for big groups or tired legs.
Constraints
- No goalkeepers — last defender cannot stand on the goal line for more than 3 seconds.
