Objective
Develop quick, accurate passing and support angles under pressure; teach defenders to press and screen as a pair.
Set-up
Mark a 12x12 yard square. Four attackers start on the perimeter (one on each side), two defenders start inside.
How it runs
- The four outside players keep possession; they can move along their side but not infield.
- The two defenders work together to win the ball or force a mistake.
- When a defender wins it or the ball leaves the grid, the player responsible swaps in.
- Count the team's consecutive passes — call the number out to add tempo.
Coaching points
- Open the body before the ball arrives so you can see both escape passes.
- Pass to the back foot of the player away from the nearest defender.
- Disguise the pass — show one way, play the other.
- Defenders press as a pair: one pressures the ball, one screens the splitting pass.
Common mistakes
- Outside players stand square to the ball and can only play back the way it came — coach an open body shape before the ball arrives.
- Passes are hit to the wrong foot, forcing an extra touch under pressure — demand back-foot passes away from the nearest defender.
- Defenders chase the ball individually instead of working as a pair — pause and reset the press-and-screen roles.
Progressions
- Limit attackers to two touches, then one.
- Add a third defender (4v3) to raise the difficulty.
- Award a point for any pass split between the two defenders.
Regressions
- Make the grid bigger.
- Allow unlimited touches.
- Use one defender (4v1) to build confidence.
Constraints
- Two-touch maximum for outside players.
