Objective

Sharpen poacher instincts: react first to loose balls in the box, finish fast and scruffy if needed, while defenders learn to clear under panic.

Set-up

One goal on a 30x20 yard box (a penalty area works perfectly). The coach stands centrally 18 yards out with a pile of balls. Two attackers and two defenders start inside the box; spare pairs wait by each post off the pitch.

How it runs

  1. The coach serves a deliberately messy ball into the box — bobbling, bouncing, spinning, anywhere.
  2. Both attackers react: the ball must be in the net within 5 seconds of the serve or the rep is dead.
  3. Defenders score a point by clearing the ball back past the coach's line.
  4. The instant a rep ends, the coach serves the next ball — three serves per wave, then the waiting pairs roll on.
  5. Attackers keep their own score across the session; defenders count clearances.
  6. Vary the serve: rolled, bounced, clipped, off the post — never let them predict it.

Coaching points

  • React on the serve — first two steps decide who scores.
  • Hit the target early: a scruffy toe-poke beats a perfect miss.
  • Follow EVERY strike in for the rebound.
  • Defenders: first contact wins — clear high, wide, or hard.

Common mistakes

  • Attackers wait for the ball to settle — coach 'attack the bounce', meeting the ball at its earliest point.
  • Players try to place a perfect finish and run out of time — reward any first-time contact on target.
  • Nobody follows the shot and rebounds die — make the second attacker's rebound run a scored stat.

Progressions

  • Add a goalkeeper so finishes must be placed.
  • Serve two balls in quick succession — score both to count.
  • Make it 2v3 so attackers must finish under heavier pressure.

Regressions

  • Serve cleaner, slower balls along the ground.
  • Extend the limit to 8 seconds.
  • Play 2v1 to give attackers more space.

Constraints

  • Finish within 5 seconds of the serve or the rep is dead.
