Objective
Teach young players to switch instantly between attacking and defending based on who wins a loose ball, with quick reactions and no time to think.
Set-up
20x25 yard area with a small goal at each end. Two teams in lines beside the coach on the sideline at the halfway point. Coach holds the balls.
How it runs
- The coach throws or rolls a ball into the area. One player from each team races for it.
- Whoever wins it attacks the goal in front of them; the other defends immediately.
- The rep ends with a goal, a save, or the ball out of bounds. Both players return to the back of their lines.
- After a few rounds, send two from each team for a 2v2.
- First team to 10 goals wins; every goal counts double if scored within 5 seconds.
Coaching points
- React to the coach's hand, not the voice.
- If you win it, go straight to goal.
- If you lose it, sprint to get between the ball and your goal.
- Look up: the goal is in front of you, not the ball.
Common mistakes
- Both players stop when the race is lost; the loser's job starts the moment the other player touches the ball.
- The winner dribbles sideways looking for a move; the first touch should be toward goal.
- Lines get long and kids get bored; run two areas side by side once the rules are learned.
Progressions
- Coach throws the ball high so players must control it before attacking.
- Add a keeper in each goal.
- Coach shouts a number: 1, 2, or 3 players per team.
Regressions
- Roll the ball slowly along the ground.
- Give the defender a 2-second head start toward their goal.
- Play with one goal and both players attacking the same goal.
Constraints
- Loser of the race must touch their own goal line before defending in round 1 (removed in later rounds).
