Corner Pockets

Cones hang in the four corners of the goal and every shot has a target. Young players learn to place a shot low and hard before they learn to blast it.

Objective

Build accurate, low shooting with the inside of the foot and the laces, aimed at the corners the keeper can't reach, with points that reward placement over power.

Set-up

Full or small goal with a cone target placed in each bottom corner and a hanging target or cone in each top corner. Shooting line 12 yards out. Two lines of players, one on each side, with balls. Keeper optional.

How it runs

  1. Round 1: players dribble two touches from the line and shoot at a bottom corner with the inside of the foot. 1 point for on target, 3 for hitting a corner target.
  2. Round 2: coach calls the corner before the shot; the player has to hit it. Laces for the far corner, inside for the near.
  3. Round 3: a keeper joins. Bottom corners score 2, top corners 3, anything in the middle scores 0 even if it goes in.
  4. Round 4: shots from a pass across the body from the coach, first time.
  5. Rotate lines every round. Keep a running team score on a whiteboard.

Coaching points

  • Look at the target, then at the ball, then strike.
  • Plant foot beside the ball, toe pointing at the corner.
  • Low and hard beats high and hopeful.
  • Follow through toward your target.

Common mistakes

  • Players blast every shot and the ball goes over; the first round is inside of the foot only until placement is normal.
  • The plant foot lands behind the ball and the shot rises; step in beside the ball.
  • Everyone aims at the same corner; the coach's call in round 2 fixes that quickly.

Progressions

  • Move the line back to 16 yards.
  • Add a passive defender on the shooter's shoulder.
  • Weak foot only for a round.

Regressions

  • Shoot from 8 yards.
  • Stationary ball for the first round.
  • Bottom corners only.

Constraints

  • A shot that hits the middle third of the goal scores zero.
