Objective

Teach players to stay calm under pressure in a tight space, keep the ball long enough to disorganize the press, then recognize the moment to release into space.

Set-up

20x20 yard box with a 4-yard cone gate in the middle of each side. Two teams of four inside plus two neutral players who always play with the team in possession. A coach on the sideline with a stopwatch and spare balls.

How it runs

  1. The team in possession keeps the ball inside the box. The coach counts aloud from the first pass.
  2. After 10 seconds of possession, the team may release the ball through any gate to a teammate who has run outside the box. That scores a point.
  3. If the ball is released before 10 seconds, no point and the other team gets a free start.
  4. Win the ball and you become the possession team; the count restarts.
  5. Four-minute rounds, three rounds. Rotate the neutrals every round.

Coaching points

  • Neutrals: stay on the far side of the ball to create the escape.
  • Two touches: receive away from pressure, then play.
  • Count with the coach; know when the gate opens.
  • Release early after 10 seconds; the press is at its most stretched.

Common mistakes

  • Players hide behind defenders so the ball has no options; the neutrals and the far players must move to the open side constantly.
  • The team panics at 8 seconds and kicks it away; nothing scores before 10, so patience is the only way to win.
  • The gate runner leaves too early and stands outside waiting; the run should start at the count of 9.

Progressions

  • Possession team limited to two touches.
  • The releasing pass must be a first-time pass.
  • Add a fifth defender for a 4v5+2.

Regressions

  • Extend the box to 25x25.
  • Reduce the count to 6 seconds.
  • Add a third neutral.

Constraints

  • No release before 10 seconds of continuous possession.
  • The gate runner must start the run from inside the box.
