Objective
Build the habit of progressing through the pitch in stages — secure it in your third, connect through midfield, then attack — instead of skipping the build with a long punt. The decision: when to play the next line and when to recycle.
Set-up
Mark a 54x36 yard pitch into three 18-yard thirds with cones, a goal and goalkeeper at each end. Play 5v5 outfield plus the GKs. Keep spare balls in both goals so restarts are instant.
How it runs
- Free play, but a goal only counts if the scoring team completed at least one pass in each third during that possession.
- If a team scores without earning all three thirds, the goal is void and the other GK restarts.
- Losing the ball resets the count — win it back and you must earn the thirds again.
- Stage 2 (once they manage it comfortably): the pass in the middle third must be forward.
- Stage 3: remove the condition entirely for the last 5 minutes and watch whether the staged build-up survives in free play.
Coaching points
- GK and deepest player: take a touch, lift your eyes, earn the first third calmly.
- Middle third is the squeeze — one-twos and third-man runs beat the crowd.
- Stretch the pitch: width in the build, depth in the attack.
- Once all thirds are earned, play with speed — the slow part is done.
Common mistakes
- Players tick the thirds off with sideways passes and never actually progress — count only passes that are received under control facing forward if it creeps in.
- The back players earn the first third then launch it long, skipping the middle — remind them the condition exists to force the midfield connection.
- Teams forget the count and argue — appoint each GK as their team's counter, calling the thirds out loud.
Progressions
- Require two passes in the middle third instead of one.
- Add an offside line at the final third to sharpen the timing of entries.
- Reward a goal scored within 10 seconds of earning the final third with 2 points.
Regressions
- Allow the count to survive a turnover if the ball is won back within 5 seconds.
- Play 6v4 in favour of the team learning the build.
- Widen the pitch to 44 yards to ease the middle-third squeeze.
Constraints
- A goal only counts after a completed pass in each third of the pitch.
- Losing possession resets the third count.
