Objective
Warm up the body and the eyes together: players scan for the called color before they receive, so the first touch already points at the next pass.
Set-up
25x25 yard area. Players split into three colors evenly. Three or four balls in play. Coach on the sideline.
How it runs
- Everyone moves freely. Start with free passing: pass to any color, then jog to a new space.
- Coach calls a color: every pass must now go to a player wearing that color. Change the call every 20 seconds.
- Call a sequence: 'red, blue, yellow' means the ball must travel red to blue to yellow to red.
- Add a rule: after passing, the passer must sprint 5 yards before receiving again.
- Final 2 minutes: one touch, sequence stays on. Count how many passes the group completes without an error.
Coaching points
- Look before you receive; know where your color is.
- First touch toward the next pass.
- Call your name to the passer so the ball finds you.
- Move after the pass; standing still is the only mistake here.
Common mistakes
- Players receive first and look second, so every pass is late; make them shout the receiver's color before the ball arrives.
- The whole group drifts to one corner; put four cones down and require one player of each color near each cone.
- Balls collide because there are too many; three balls for 12 players is plenty.
Progressions
- Two sequences running at the same time with two balls.
- Add two defenders who try to intercept.
- Passes must alternate feet.
Regressions
- Two colors instead of three.
- Unlimited touches.
- Walk for the first 2 minutes.
Constraints
- The ball may not go back to the player who passed it.
