Objective

Develop a clean shooting technique from distance: a positive first touch to set, then an accurate, firm strike.

Set-up

A line of players on the edge of the box with balls, a server to lay the ball, goal and keeper.

How it runs

  1. Server lays the ball into the striker's path on the edge of the box.
  2. Striker takes one touch to set, then strikes first or second time.
  3. Aim low and into the corners; follow the shot in for rebounds.
  4. Alternate the side the ball is laid from.

Coaching points

  • First touch out of your feet, into your stride.
  • Plant foot beside the ball, head steady, strike through the middle.
  • Low and accurate beats high and hard — pick your corner.
  • Follow it in; keepers spill, defenders block.

Common mistakes

  • Players lean back and the ball sails over — head over the ball, strike through the laces.
  • Everyone places it to the keeper's side for power's sake — pick a corner and commit to it.
  • The touch before the shot sets up nothing — the set touch creates the angle; coach it as part of the shot.

Progressions

  • One-touch strikes only.
  • Add a closing defender.
  • Add a points target for corners.

Regressions

  • Static ball, no server.
  • Move closer in.
  • Remove the keeper.

Constraints

  • Shot must be taken from outside the box.
