Objective

Coach the defending fundamentals of a 1v1: approach speed, body shape, jockeying and the timing of the tackle.

Set-up

Attacker with a ball at one end attacking a small goal; defender starts level with the goal.

How it runs

  1. Defender passes to the attacker and presses to close the space.
  2. Slow down on approach, get side-on, and show the attacker away from goal.
  3. Defend the small goal; win the ball or force a poor shot.
  4. Swap roles each rep.

Coaching points

  • Close down fast, then brake — don't arrive out of control.
  • Side-on body shape, low and balanced, on the front foot.
  • Show the attacker onto their weaker side or wide.
  • Tackle when they take a heavy touch — be patient until then.

Common mistakes

  • Defenders sprint flat-out and fly past the attacker — fast approach, slow arrive.
  • The defending stance is square — angle the body to show one way only.
  • Defenders watch the ball's fakes — watch the ball itself, not the stepovers.

Progressions

  • Add a second goal so the defender must stay honest.
  • Bigger area for more running.
  • 2v1 to add cover defending.

Regressions

  • Smaller area.
  • Attacker starts slower.
  • Remove the goal — just win the ball.

Constraints

  • Defender must stay goal-side at all times.
