Objective

Turn throw-ins from a 50/50 into reliable possession with two or three rehearsed movements and good support angles.

Set-up

A thrower on the line with two or three nearby options and a defender or two to make it realistic.

How it runs

  1. Rehearse the three options: down the line, into feet with a set back, and the give-and-go past the thrower.
  2. Players show for the ball with sharp movement to create the angle.
  3. Receiver protects the ball or returns it to the thrower stepping on.
  4. Add defenders to pressure the choices.

Coaching points

  • Create the angle with movement before the throw — don't stand still.
  • Throw to the correct foot/side away from the defender.
  • Set back to the thrower stepping in is the safe reset.
  • Look long down the line only when it's clearly on.

Common mistakes

  • The thrower throws to feet under pressure with no follow-up — throw, step in, and offer the return.
  • Receivers stand still waiting for the throw — check away then come, or spin behind.
  • The routine ends with the first touch — coach what happens after possession is secured.

Progressions

  • Add a second defender.
  • Make it directional toward a goal.
  • One-touch sets only.

Regressions

  • No defenders.
  • Bigger area.
  • Walk the patterns first.

Constraints

  • Must use a rehearsed movement, not a hopeful throw.
