Objective

Receiving with back to goal in the box and producing a finish within two touches of the turn.

Set-up

Goal with GK. Striker starts back-to-goal at the penalty spot with a mannequin (later a defender) behind. Server 20 yards out with balls.

How it runs

  1. Server plays firm into the striker's feet.
  2. The striker receives, turns past the mannequin's shoulder (either side) and finishes within two touches.
  3. Five reps each side, then rotate striker, server and (later) defender.
  4. Make it live: the defender starts passive, then 50%, then full.

Coaching points

  • Check away then come to meet the pass — create the half-yard.
  • Feel the defender: turn away from their lean, into the open side.
  • First touch across the body takes you past the shoulder; second touch is the strike.
  • Finish low through the bottom corners — placement over power from this range.

Common mistakes

  • Strikers spin the same way every time — defenders learn it; train both shoulders equally.
  • The first touch goes back toward the server and the chance dies — touch across the body, past the defender.
  • The finish is leant-back and lifted — stay over the ball after a turn.

Progressions

  • Live defender at full pressure.
  • Vary service: bouncing, aerial, driven.
  • Add a second runner for the layoff option if the turn is blocked.

Regressions

  • No defender — just turn and finish.
  • Softer service, more touches allowed.
  • Bigger area for the turn.

Constraints

  • Two touches maximum after the turn.
