Objective

Add the outside-of-the-foot pass to every player's toolkit: a fast, disguised pass that beats a defender who has read the hips.

Set-up

Triangles of three players, 10 yards apart, each triangle with one ball. Cones mark the corners. A fourth player waits outside each triangle to become the defender.

How it runs

  1. Stage 1: pass around the triangle using only the outside of the foot. Right foot going clockwise, left foot counter-clockwise. Two touches.
  2. Stage 2: receive on the inside of one foot, pass with the outside of the same foot. One touch to set, one to play.
  3. Stage 3: the receiver shows their hips toward one corner and plays the other with the outside of the foot. Disguise is the point.
  4. Stage 4: the fourth player joins as a defender for a 3v1. Outside-of-the-foot passes that beat the defender count double.
  5. Rotate the defender every 90 seconds. Two rounds of each stage.

Coaching points

  • Toe down, ankle locked, strike with the outside of the laces.
  • Hips point where you are not going.
  • Short backlift; the pass should surprise them.
  • Follow through across the body for a curved flight.

Common mistakes

  • Players hit it with the toe and the ball skews; the contact is the outside of the laces with the toe pointed down.
  • The disguise is so slow the defender reads it anyway; the fake with the hips has to be quick and the strike immediate.
  • Players lean back and the ball lifts; head over the ball.

Progressions

  • Outside-of-the-foot passes must be first time.
  • Increase to 15-yard sides.
  • Play 4v2 in a square with the same scoring.

Regressions

  • Stationary passing pairs before the triangle.
  • Allow three touches.
  • Roll the ball with the hand and strike it with the outside of the foot.

Constraints

  • Inside-of-the-foot passes score zero in stages 3 and 4.
