Objective

Train both moments of transition: react fast when you win it to exploit the overload, and recover instantly when you lose it.

Set-up

4v4 to two goals with two neutral bouncers on the side lines who always play for the team in possession.

How it runs

  1. Play to goals; the two neutrals support whoever has the ball, making it 6v4.
  2. Win the ball and immediately use the overload to attack the other goal.
  3. Lose it and recover at once — the neutrals now help the other team.
  4. Quick resets keep the transitions coming.

Coaching points

  • On winning it, play forward fast and use the free men.
  • On losing it, react instantly — first job is to get goal-side.
  • Use the neutrals to keep the ball when the forward option isn't on.
  • Heads up in transition — the picture changes in a second.

Common mistakes

  • Neutrals drift into crowded areas — they live in the space where the spare pass exists.
  • Teams celebrate winning the ball and immediately lose it again — first pass after the turnover is the most important.
  • The losing team presses with their heads down — reset the picture: who presses, who covers?

Progressions

  • Limit touches when in possession.
  • One neutral only for a fairer fight.
  • Bonus for scoring within 6 seconds of winning it.

Regressions

  • Add a third neutral.
  • Bigger area.
  • Walk the transition moments first.

Constraints

  • Neutrals are two-touch.
