Objective

A repeatable system for defending direct and wide free-kicks: wall size, keeper position, zonal cover, second balls.

Set-up

Free-kicks placed at varying angles 18-30 yards out. Full defensive unit vs an attacking group with rehearsed deliveries.

How it runs

  1. GK calls the wall size by position (central = 4-5, wide = 2-3) and sets it on the near post line.
  2. Remaining defenders mark zonally across the six-yard line and the edge.
  3. Attackers deliver or shoot; defenders clear and break out to a halfway target.
  4. Reset, move the kick location, repeat — every angle gets rehearsed.

Coaching points

  • The wall protects one side; the GK owns the other — never both behind the wall's side.
  • Tallest player on the inside of the wall; no jumping unless agreed.
  • Zonal markers attack the ball's flight, not their man's shirt.
  • The clearance isn't the end — win the second ball and break out together.

Common mistakes

  • The wall creeps and turns side-on at the strike — brave, square, connected.
  • Everyone watches the kick and nobody owns the second ball — name the second-ball hunters in advance.
  • The GK hides behind the wall and sees nothing — position to see the ball with the wall covering the far side.

Progressions

  • Live attacking routines with movement and screens.
  • Add a counter target: clear and hit it within 8 seconds.
  • Defend back-to-back kicks for fatigue realism.

Regressions

  • Static attackers, no rebounds.
  • Walk the wall-building procedure step by step.
  • Fewer attackers in the box.

Constraints

  • The wall sets within 15 seconds of the whistle — match speed.
