Objective
Encourage players to scan and switch play, shifting the opposition to open space on the far side before attacking.
Set-up
A 40x50 pitch split into three vertical channels (left, central, right). 6v6 plus keepers. Normal game rules with one twist that rewards switching.
How it runs
- Play a normal 6v6 to goals.
- A goal scored within three passes of switching the ball from one wide channel to the other counts double.
- Teams are encouraged to build on one side to drag the opponent across, then switch.
- Rotate channels and keep an honest scoreline including the double-goal bonus.
Coaching points
- Scan before you receive — know where the space is before the ball arrives.
- Build on one side to commit defenders, then switch to the free side fast.
- The switch should be a firm, accurate pass or a driven ball — not a hopeful one.
- On the far side, attack the space immediately before it closes.
Common mistakes
- The switch is one long hopeful ball instead of fast circulation through midfield — show both routes to the far side.
- Players switch the ball but nobody attacks the space it lands in — the switch is the start, not the end.
- Possession players watch the ball travel instead of repositioning — move while it moves.
Progressions
- A completed switch must go through a central player.
- Triple points for a first-time finish after a switch.
- Limit the team to two touches in their own half.
Regressions
- Count any switch as a single bonus point, no goal needed.
- Widen the pitch.
- Add a neutral player to help keep the ball.
Constraints
- A goal within three passes of a side-to-side switch counts double.
