Objective
Train the build-up against a structured mid-block: progressing through the thirds with conditioned zone rules that force clean first-line passes, brave receiving between the lines, and a timed release in behind — while the coached unit rotates so everyone trains their role.
Set-up
50x70 pitch split into three zones with cones: BUILD (deepest 22 yards), MIDDLE, FINAL. 8v8 plus a GK in the main goal; the building team sets up 3-2-3 from their GK, the defending team holds a 4-3-1 mid-block that starts in the middle zone. A counter-goal at the building team's end keeps turnovers honest.
How it runs
- The building team starts every rep from their GK and must progress zone by zone — no skipping the middle zone in the first two phases of the session.
- Zone conditions: maximum two defenders may press into the BUILD zone; the building team must complete at least three passes in the MIDDLE zone before entering the FINAL zone.
- The mid-block holds its shape until its trigger: a backwards pass or a bouncing ball releases the full press.
- Goals: the building team scores in the main goal; the block scores in the counter-goal within 10 seconds of a regain.
- Phase 3 of the session: remove the zone-skipping ban — a clipped ball over the block into the FINAL zone is now legal if a runner arrives onside.
- Rotate the coached unit every 10 minutes: back three and pivot, then the midfield three, then the front three's movement between the lines.
Coaching points
- First pass from the GK breaks the first line whenever the picture allows.
- Pivots: receive on the half-turn between the block's lines, not in front of them.
- Third-line runners fix the back four before the release pass.
- Lose it? The nearest three counter-press the regainer immediately.
Common mistakes
- The back line circulates side to side without ever threatening a line-break — demand the first vertical option is checked on every touch.
- Midfielders show for the ball in front of the block where they are easy to screen — coach the movement to receive BETWEEN the lines on the half-turn.
- After a turnover the building team jogs back and the counter-goal punishes them — the counter-press reaction is part of every rep.
Progressions
- Allow the full block to press the BUILD zone on any slow circulation.
- Add a 12-second limit to cross each zone.
- Play completely zone-free with the block choosing its own pressing moments.
Regressions
- Give the building team a +1 with a neutral pivot.
- Block starts passive in a low block, stepping only in the FINAL zone.
- Reduce the middle-zone requirement to one completed pass.
Constraints
- Three completed passes in the middle zone before entering the final zone.
- Only two defenders may press inside the build zone.
