Objective

Develop reaction speed, diving technique and the recovery to make a strong second save.

Set-up

Keeper in goal with two servers and a big supply of balls for rapid, varied shots.

How it runs

  1. Server 1 shoots; the keeper makes the save and recovers to their feet fast.
  2. Server 2 immediately shoots to the opposite side for the second save.
  3. Vary the height, side and pace; keep the tempo high in short bursts.
  4. Work in sets of 6–8 shots, then rest.

Coaching points

  • Set before every shot — still feet at the moment of the strike.
  • Dive through the line of the ball, top hand strong.
  • Recover quickly to a balanced position for the next one.
  • Parry wide and away from danger when you can't catch.

Common mistakes

  • The keeper guesses early and dives before the shot — react to the strike, not the run-up.
  • Recovery between saves is slow and the second shot scores — save, recover feet, set again.
  • Parries go back into the danger zone — turn rebounds wide, never central.

Progressions

  • Add deflections (a mannequin to flick the ball).
  • Shorter recovery time between shots.
  • Add a follow-up rebound.

Regressions

  • Single shots with full reset.
  • Softer serves.
  • Telegraph the side to build technique.

Constraints

  • Must regain feet between the two shots.
