Objective

Hard-wire the counter-press: the instant the ball is lost, the nearest players swarm to win it back immediately, before the opposition can settle.

Set-up

Possession game (e.g. 5v5 or 6v6) in a tight area. Score by completing a pass count or hitting a target.

How it runs

  1. Play possession; the moment a team loses the ball, they have three seconds to win it back.
  2. Win it inside three seconds and you keep your pass count building; fail and the other team scores a point.
  3. The nearest players press immediately; the rest cut off the escape passes.
  4. Keep the area tight so the counter-press is realistic.

Coaching points

  • React on the turnover — the first two seconds decide it.
  • Nearest player presses the ball instantly, no hesitation.
  • Team-mates close the nearest passing options, don't ball-watch.
  • If you can't win it in three, drop and get compact fast.

Common mistakes

  • After losing the ball players appeal or sulk for a beat — the reaction to losing it is the whole drill.
  • Everyone swarms the ball and the easy pass escapes — nearest presses, others cut the exits.
  • The 3 seconds becomes 6 and nobody notices — count out loud, every time.

Progressions

  • Cut the window to two seconds.
  • Add directional goals.
  • Reward winning it in the attacking half double.

Regressions

  • Bigger area.
  • Five-second window.
  • Add a floater for the team in possession.

Constraints

  • Three seconds to win it back after every turnover.
