90-Minute Soccer Practice Plan
Who this is for: any competitive youth or club squad, U12 up, with a decent-sized group and a full field.
The shape. Ninety minutes divides sensibly into five blocks: warm-up, technical, main topic, application, game. Everything before the main topic exists to prepare for it, and everything after exists to make it stick under pressure. If you can't say in one sentence what the topic is, you don't have a session, you have ninety minutes of activity.
Topic in this example: playing forward through the lines. Pick your own and swap the drills — the shape holds.
The session
0:00–0:12 — Warm-up: dynamic-passing-warmup-grid
Ball from minute one. If today's topic is passing, warm up passing, so they arrive at the main block already in it.
0:12–0:26 — Technical: receiving-on-the-half-turn
Fourteen minutes on the single habit that makes playing forward possible. A player who receives facing her own goal has one option. A player who receives on the half-turn has three. Everything you're about to coach depends on which one she does.
Say: "Look over your shoulder before it comes. Not as it arrives. Before."
0:26–0:48 — Main topic: line-breaking-ladder
Twenty-two minutes, the biggest block of the session, on the thing you came to fix. Unopposed shape first for four or five minutes so the pattern is clear, then add the defenders and let it get messy.
Two freezes maximum. Coaches who stop a drill nine times have stopped coaching and started talking.
Say: "The pass that beats a line is worth three that go sideways. Take the risk in their half. Not in ours."
0:48–1:10 — Application: three-zone-possession
Same idea, more chaos, more players, real decisions. This is where you find out whether the topic actually went in or whether it only worked because the drill was arranged to make it work.
1:10–1:28 — Game: earn-the-thirds-6v6
The constraint carries the topic into a free game without you having to say the word again. That's the whole art of it — the rule coaches for you and the players think they're just playing.
1:28–1:32 — Finish
One question: what was different today? Let them answer it. Then go.
Adjusting it
Bigger group? Split the main topic block and run two versions with your assistant. Smaller group, under twelve? Replace the application block with 5v2-double-rondo and shorten the game. Day before a match? Cut the main topic to twelve minutes, cut the application entirely, and spend the time on attacking-corner-menu. Day after a match? Halve the intensity of everything and finish with two-ball-chaos-game, which is fun and requires nothing from tired legs.
