Set-up
Attacking unit of 8 builds from their GK. Defending unit of 8 sets in a mid-block. When the ball goes to a designated 'trigger' player (the opposition CB on a specific side), the press activates. If the ball is played away before the press arrives, defending unit resets. Go again from GK.
Coaching points
- The trigger player is the CDM's cue — Max calls it, everyone moves with him
- Wingers: shut the back pass angle first, then close down — don't let them play out easy
- If we press and get beat, we recover fast — no hanging around sulking
Progressions
- Attacking team gets a point for playing through the press; defending team gets a point for a turnover
- Attacking team allowed to use GK as an out ball to test the keepers' distribution under pressure
