Set-up

Two patterns run from each side of the pitch alternately: (1) RB-RW-CM triangle, wide overload, pull-back to arriving CAM; (2) LW runs in behind off a forward's hold-up, cutback or first-time finish. Two active defenders in each pattern. GK in goal.

Coaching points

  • Moreno and Lang: your run into the box must be disguised — check away, then break late
  • Cruz: hold-up is your job before the ball arrives; back to defender, strong, create the option
  • Pattern 2: Brooks must make the run even if he thinks the pass isn't coming — commitment creates the option

Progressions

  • Add a third defender to both patterns to replicate match resistance
  • Remove the scripted start: coach plays a random ball in and the attacking unit must self-organize the pattern from that moment
