Set-up
Defensive unit sets up in a mid-block; attacking unit of 7 tries to break them down with build-up play. Coach calls 'press' or 'hold' triggers to drill when to squeeze and when to stay compact. Defenders must track runners and not ball-watch.
Coaching points
- Block shape: midfield 3 sits in front of the back 4, never more than 12 yards apart
- Press trigger: front 3 press GK-to-CB pass — everyone moves up together on that trigger
- CBs: do not step out unless CDM covers; communicate before committing
Progressions
- Give the attacking unit free play against the full block — live defending
- Introduce wide overloads (2v1 on the flank) to test the full back's cover responsibilities
